The Farming Lifestyle

Over the past few days my family have been on the farm helping with the calves and I thought that I could create a video of the style of farming like:
  • The tanker what collects the milk
  • Calving
  • Maze to feed the cows
And of course "THE PAYOUT" The pay out is important to Farmers because it is how the milk is valued and at the moment it is very low.

So far we have had over 300 cows in and still 600 more to calve. We have got 100 keepers, 24 Jersey Bulls and about 176 bobbies.

The milk tanker comes every 4 milkings to collect the milk and take it to the factory to be stored and put into milk bottles that soon go into stores.

We feed our calves Meal, Powder , Hay and of course Milk. We feed the calves Gold milk and other sorts of fresh milk that our farm produces. The most calves we have had in a day this year is 80. 50 bobbies and 30 keepers.

  1. What a wonderful window to your farming lifestyle!!! I would love to hear some narration to go with this to help me understand some of the pictures/ videos... We had a go at our first on the scene reporting when a helicopter came to school last term... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nAZFq1PyOI8

    1. Hi Mrs Buist
Thank you for the lovely comment that you left me. The way to explain it is that when you feed the calves you have a feeder that can fit 13 calves at a time and you pour in the milk and they are in separate pens otherwise there would be 200 calves in one pen. When the cows get milked they go on a platform that can fit 60 cows at a time then there is 4 cups that suck the milk out of them that go on there tits what the calves also feed on when they are a new born and the cows get to eat some meal and palm corneal on the plat form.

    2. Oh! I get it now! Next time, why not think about adding a voice over so that non-farming folk or non-experts can learn even more from you than just getting a window? I really enjoy your blog, Caro! Keep up the wonderful writing, sharing and connecting!

  3. Hi Caro, great job on the farming information and video! I was fascinated watching the video! I live on a farm here in Alberta, so live learning how we are the same and different. We done have dairy, but I have seen some neighbors dairy set up and it looks like yours. We have black Angus and grow hay and barley. All our cows are out on pasture for the summer. Our calves are about five months old. We live in an area that needs irrigation to grow crops. We have wheel moves and a pivot. Our year has been extremely dry, so without irrigation we wouldn't have any crop at all!
I loved your diagram of the pens. You really showed the feed for the calves well too! What a lot of work! I don't know what bobbies are! Isn't it funny how we have different words for things.
Keep up the great work! I love hearing anout farming in New Zealand.

    1. Hi Mrs Grosfield
A Bobbie calf is another name for a boy calf and they go on a truck to the factory but we rear jersey Bulls so if they are that colour we take them to a farm.

  4. Hello Caro,
This is great for other students to see, especially if they are city kids. You look like you enjoy the lifestyle a lot.
I wonder what the pellets are made of that the calves eat? You mentioned cornmeal but is this in the pellets?
I am very impressed that you used your own time to make and upload the video. The music sets the scene too.

  5. This is an amazing video Caro. You have really captured farm life. I think you could teach me how to make such a great video. By the way, I'm a big fan of the Wagon Wheel song, nice choice!

    1. Hi Mrs Berry
Thank you for your lovely comment. I thought Wagon Wheel was a country song so I decided to go with it. Please come and visit again.
